Noise and odour management

How the Killough AD Plant will operate without affecting your neighbourhood

Baseline

What the noise survey found

An environmental noise survey established the existing sound levels near homes and along transport routes. The work followed ISO 1996-2:2017 standards for acoustic measurement and assessment.

  • Construction noise stays within limits
  • Daily operations meet required thresholds
  • Annual surveys verify ongoing compliance
Commitment

Odour Control

The facility will process agricultural feedstocks which are typical of a normal farming activity. It will operate similarly to a highly regulated and enclosed version of a modern farmyard over a paved surface, but with significantly greater environmental controls.

What the odour control process looks like!

Fact: Six individual odour-control processes have been designed into the Killough anaerobic digestion (AD) plant, including enclosed handling, sealed tanks, controlled air capture and dedicated odour treatment.

Containment

How odour is managed and contained

An odour assessment used AERMOD atmospheric modelling to predict off-site concentrations, following EN13725:2022 standards for European Odour Units. The assessment considered the strength and offensiveness of potential odours and the sensitivity of nearby homes.

  • Sealed reactors in enclosed building

  • All feedstock storage fully enclosed

  • Two-stage air treatment before release

Questions

Will I notice noise?

Construction noise will stay within the 65 dB LAeq,T limit set for nearby homes. During operation, the plant meets required thresholds through best practice management. Annual compliance surveys verify that noise stays within permitted levels.

The main source would be the digestion process itself, but here it happens inside sealed reactors in an enclosed building. Feedstock storage and handling are also fully enclosed. The sealed design means odour is not expected to be a significant issue.

The EPA will issue an operating licence if the project is permitted. Annual noise surveys will verify compliance. The site operates under planning conditions and an Odour Management Plan that sets out daily operational controls.

The Odour Management Plan includes operational procedures to prevent problems. If an issue occurs, the EPA licence conditions require immediate reporting and corrective action. The site is monitored and inspected regularly.
